CHAPTER 6
Part of the Sabir clan; father Ali, mother Amina, and two of the children Hakim and Ruqiyyah are spread out inspecting the potential new location as the agent totes it features.
“This is really a great location!” the agent begins. “It has easy access into the lot and ample parking. There is a new sub-division being built nearby so there will be plenty of traffic. Not too mention there are no competing restaurants within miles. It’s perfect!”
“It is nice” Ali nods inspecting what will be the kitchen.
“Are the other stores leased as of yet? No other food joints are here?” Hakim inquires.
“Yes all the other spots are leased but this one and the one next door. No food joints, just a beauty parlor, laundry mat, and video store. I’m meeting a potential tenant shortly who indicated he was opening a clothing store.” The agent replies. “That’s good luck! People will be here for a while so they’ll need to eat” Hakim adds.
Meanwhile Ruqiyyah and her mother are planning the décor and layout of the space. “So what do you ladies think?” Ali asks as he rejoins the group. “I believe this is it Abbi” Ruqiyyah replies eagerly. “It’s perfect!”
“I agree" Hakim co-signs. “It is perfect”
“So are you guys ready for this?” Ali asks his children seriously. He knew they were but wanted to hear it from them.
“Yes sir!” They answered in unison before Hakim steps up. “It’s time to expand and I doubt we can find a more suitable location.”
“Na’am Abbi, the expressway is close. The colleges are a few miles away, it’s a great location” Ruqiyyah adds.
“I’m gonna cry” Amina whines playfully, but a lone tear does manage to escape her eye. “We’ll take it” Ali announces to the happy agent.
“Great! Let’s sign the lease then.” He smiles. "Let me grab the check book,” Amina says and rushes outside to their vehicle.
Carlos pulls into the same strip mall and checks the address on the paper. He pulls right next to the Sabir family van and parks. Mrs. Sabir recognizes him and goes over to speak.
“Well, hello young man, how are you?” Amina sings filling Carlos mind with memories. This was the sweet lady next door who treated him as one of her own when he was small; the one who held him tightly when his parents were killed.
“Fine, how are you?” Carlos croaked with emotions. “I’m great Al-hamdulillah! The kids and Ali are inside, come say hello” she insisted.
“Sure” he replied willing himself to ‘man up’. The woman brought back memories he had suppressed long ago. He got his emotions in check and followed her inside. “Hey guys look who I found!” Amina announces as she returns with Carlos in tow. Ruqiyyah does a double take then lowers her gaze.
“Los!” Hakim exclaims and rushes over to embrace his old friend. “How are you?”
“I’m good, good to see you, Mr. Sabir and um, Rosalyn?” Carlos replies causing Ruqiyyah to suppress a smirk.
“It’s Ruqiyyah! I’m surprised you don’t remember. You were all so close” Mrs.
